July inflation rises to 6.39%

The cost of living continued to rise in July with inflation rising to 6.39 percent.

This is the second consecutive month inflation has been on the rise after rising to 5.8 percent in June on the back of higher food costs.

During the monetary policy committee meeting on Monday, the Central Bank anticipated the rise in the cost of goods as higher of higher fuel took effect.

The bank however maintains that inflation is under control, even maintain the central bank rate at 10.5 percent with plans to contain shocks.

According to the Kenya bureau of statistics the transport index went up 1.13 percent in July on the back of the increases in the prices of petrol and diesel.

Although the costs of some food items went down, they were outweighed by a jump in prices of others, driving up the goods and non-alcoholic drinks index by 1.12 percent.
