KRA destroys illegal goods at Mombasa port

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials on Monday began the destruction of illicit cargo and condemned goods at the port of Mombasa in an exercise that will take three days.

The consignment being destroyed includes 18 containers of sugar, 49 containers of rice and 63 containers of ethanol and other condemned goods.

Addressing a press conference at the Port of Mombasa on Monday, KRA customs and border control commissioner Julius Munyok warned that all container freight station owners engaging in smuggling of illegal cargo in the country will be arrested and prosecuted.

This comes even as police ordered importers whose cargo is currently stuck in the two closed container fright stations (CFSs) in Mombasa to hurriedly collect them as police continue with investigations.

Speaking to journalists at KPA, port police boss Zachaues Ng’eno maintained that no imports would be allowed into the CFSs until police complete their investigations.

Meanwhile, operations remained paralysed at the two CFSs even as its managing director Salim Juma awaited official communication from the government before embarking on clearing the cargo.
