Why President Kenyatta revoked Kimaiyos appointment

President Uhuru Kenyatta has revoked the appointment of David Kimaiyo as the chairman of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA). The former inspector general of police is seen to have fallen out of favor with the government with mounting cases of corruption at KAA.

In his place President Uhuru has appointed former chief of defense forces Julius Karangi to serve until January 2018.

Last year was embroiled in a major bus tendering scam that saw senior managers including managing director Lucy Mbugua fired. Insiders say that Kimaiyo had assumed a role equivalent to executive chairman and rarely consulted in making decisions.

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has been calling for the disbandment of the authority’s board, claiming directors were not working in the best interest of the parastatal.

Captain Bootsy Musyoka, William ole Mayiani, Eunice Kigen, Susan Kiama, Mbatia Kimani and Jeridah Bosibori are among the board directors. The remaining slots are taken up by principal secretaries from the ministry of transport, interior and treasury.

The management team also has seven posts held in an acting capacity including acting managing director Yatich Kangugo.
