Cop holds wife hostage, shoots another woman in the head

A 27-year-old prison warder attached to Uruku GK Prison in Imenti Central, Meru County held his wife and child hostage after going on a shooting spree; shooting another woman in the head.

The woman was taken to Githongo Hospital and later referred to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital under critical condition.

Douglas Asuma is alleged to have been in an on and off dispute with his wife.

According to the head of Uruku GK Prison, a Mr Manyara, Mr Asuma and his wife had a quarrel Monday 29th, which would end up with the latter trying to flee on foot.

“They started quarreling at around 1:00pm. Asuma wanted to beat her up before she tried to escape,” Manyara said.

“The warden then grabbed a gun from a colleague and tried to shoot at his wife but missed ending up shooting another woman in the head.”

Confirming the incident, Meru OCPD Boniface Lisiolo said he received a call requesting for back up as the suspect had held his wife hostage at their house.

“I was called by the officer in charge around 1:00pm requesting for my officers to help arrest a situation where an officer had held hostage his wife after shooting another person in the head. They had a long standing dispute but things got out of hand today,” said Lisiolo.

Lisiolo added that armed police officers from Kariene Police Station then cordoned off the house in an attempt to negotiate with Asuma to surrender and release the woman.

“The officers and religious leaders tried to negotiate with him to release the wife..”

Asuma surrendered later and was taken to Githongo Police Station.
