After fistfighting, MCAs table Gachagua impeachment motion

The impeachment motion against Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua was finally tabled in the County Assembly Thursday afternoon.

The impeachment motion, which resulted from the county’s budget stalemate, was moved by Kiganjo Ward MCA, Baragu Mutahi, and received the support of 33 out of 47 MCAs.

Mutahi accused the Governor of gross violation of the Constitution, the Public Procurement and Disposal Act, and the Public Finance Management Act.

Two MCAs, who are deemed to be Governor Gachagua’s supporters, were removed from their assembly positions.

Arthur Maina, who was the Minority Leader and Konyu MCA, was replaced by Frederick Karere while Minority Whip, John Ndumia of KamakwaWard, was replaced by Peter Kagume of MagutuWard.

The ejected MCAs were at Hiriga with Governor Gachagua during a thanksgiving ceremony at his residence.

Governor Gachagua has, however, maintained that he will not be cowed by the move to oust him from office reading malice into the whole process.

Speaking during the thanksgiving ceremony, Gachagua said that he will move to court to block the ouster.

Gachagua alleges that the motion is backed by his political rival based in Nairobi who, he says, has been bribing the MCA’s to create political instability in Nyeri.

On Wednesday, a fistfight erupted at the Nyeri County Assembly chambers after an attempt to table the impeachment motion failed.

In 2014, six MPs from the county also planned to push for his removal after he voiced his support for the Pesa Mashinani Referendum drive.
