Arrest Huruma building owner, orders IG Boinnet

Police Inspector General Joseph Boinnet has ordered for the arrest of the owner of the Huruma building that collapsed on Friday night, killing 8 people and injuring many others.

Boinnet says the landlord, who has only been identified as Kamau, has gone under after the tragedy on Friday night.

Speaking after visiting the scene of the tragedy, Boinnet said the owner of the house will face several charges after it emerged that the house was not cleared for occupation.

Leaders, who visited the scene, including nominated MP Johnstone Sakaja, also called for the arrest of the landlord for flouting housing safety rules.

This follows the death of 8 people and the displacement of 150 families that resulted from the collapse of the building in Huruma, Nairobi.

The Chairman of the National Construction Authority (NCA) Stephen Oundo has stated that the building had no occupation certificate from the authority.

Oundo further stated that the building owners had no authorization from the NCA, an indicator that they had not fulfilled regulatory requirements for occupation.

President Uhuru Kenyatta also visited the site to see how far rescue efforts, which were hampered by rains, have reached.

President Kenyatta instructed officials of the Interior Ministry and the County Government to undertake an immediate survey of all the houses in the area to find out those which are at risk of collapsing.

He said those in houses that are at risk of collapsing should be directed to move to buildings that are safe.

The President gave the order after it was revealed that the NCA had condemned the house, which collapsed, but the directive was ignored.

President Kenyatta instructed the Inspector General of the National Police Service, Joseph Boinnet, to take immediate action to identify and arrest owners of buildings who have ignored directives by the National Construction Authority.
