Baringo residents protest rising cases of cattle rustling

Business along the Marigat-Mochongoi road was paralysed on Sunday after members of the Illchamus community held protests over rising cases of insecurity by cattle rustling in Baringo County.

The members accused the local security officers of politicising security matters and collaborating with some politicians to oppress them.

They appealed to Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery to urgently intervene and rescue them from the cattle rustlers.

The residents also demanded the unconditional release of Mukutani MCA Lemison Perkei, who was arrested on Friday.

The MCA was arrested over claims that he incited members of the public to violence in a statement he made at a meeting held at Sidai are on February 1, 2016.

Reports said that the meeting had been convened by the local administration officials to discuss rising cases of insecurity and was disrupted after the MCA rose and made polarising statements, forcing the meeting to end in disarray.

The protests come just one week after cattle rustlers ambushed residents of Mbechot Village in Marigat, Baringo County, killing three people, including two brothers, before stealing their livestock.
