Caring for the poor dominates Kangemi Papal Mass

Hundreds of Catholic faithful turned up for the Papal Mass at the St. Joseph the worker Catholic Church in Kangemi Friday morning.

The Pope, who is on his final day of Kenya’s visit, said the needs of the poor hold a special place in his heart.

The Holy Father said he is not new to challenges facing people who live in informal settlements.

Pope Francis urged authorities to provide such people with the basic needs that include clean water, health services, good infrastructure and play grounds.

“To deny a family water is a great injustice,” noted Pope Francis.

Pope Francis blessed children and adults in the mass that was attended by hundreds of faithful.

The Pope emphasized on his message of good values and humanity.

He sent a message to African leaders that they could do with less pomp and a bit more humility.

Barely two hours after arriving in Nairobi on Wednesday, Pope Francis told President Uhuru Kenyatta and dignitaries that they had a duty to care for the poor and support the aspirations of the young.

“I encourage you to work with integrity and transparency for the common good, and to foster a spirit of solidarity at every level of society,” he said, speaking in the elegant surroundings of State House, the Kenyan president’s official residence.

Speaking early Thursday when he met inter-religious and ecumenical representatives at the Apostolic Nunciature in Nairobi, the Pope called for cooperation and understanding among religious leaders in order to ensure effective service delivery.

“Religion plays an important role in forming conscious service and uphold statutory values and raising citizens who will infuse integrity in civil society,” he said.

The Pope is set to address the youth at Kasarani before he leaves the country for Uganda.
