Cleric in custody over sexual harassment

Police in Naivasha are holding a cleric for allegedly abusing his daughter sexually.

The suspect, 45, was arrested on Thursday after the minor told her teachers that she had been abused by the cleric for over two years.

The arrest comes even as it emerged that the pastor was involved in an illicit affair with one of his elder daughters who later escaped from their home.

The girl is undergoing counseling at Naivasha Safe House, this is according to Naivasha sub-county children officer John Chege.

The suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

In 2006, Parliament enacted into law the Sexual Offences Act, a major milestone in the history of sexual violence and of the law.

The Bill was sponsored by then nominated MP Njoki Ndungu who was a longtime activist in women affairs.

Njoki received significant harassment and opposition from certain male colleagues but in the end, however, much of the public and a majority of MPs agreed that the courts had to take a tougher stance against sexual offenders.
