The search and rescue operations at Westlands area along Peponi Road in Nairobi where a wall collapsed has ended successfully after 12 hours, this is according to the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU ).

In a statement, NDMU said all the four male missing bodies have been recovered.

Nine men were rescued alive and rushed to a nearby hospital where they were treated and discharged with only one still remaining admitted.

The inter-agency operations was a collaboration of KDF- Disaster Response Unit, National Disaster Operation Centre,  National Disaster Management Unit  (NDMU), National Youth Service, Nairobi County Government, National Police Service, Kenya RedCross  and members of the public.

“Members of the public are advised to keep off from the site because of the dangers surrounding the scene. We thank all stakeholders who supported the operations and made it a success,” read the statement by Deputy Director and Communication Officer at NDMU Pius Masai.

The wall at a construction site along General Mathenge road and close to the Westgate shopping mall collapsed trapping workers Thursday afternoon.

The collapse of the wall raised concern about building safety standards given that it happened just a day after another building under construction collapsed in Spring Valley, Nairobi killing a mason and seriously injuring two of his colleagues.
