CORD postpones anti-IEBC march to mourn Mama Lucy Kibaki

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has postponed the occupation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) headquarters that was to take place on Tuesday, 3rd May 2016.

In a statement to the media, the coalition said they were postponing the planned occupation in honour of the former First Lady, the late Mama Lucy Kibaki, and in compliance with the three-day national mourning to be announced when her body arrives on Sunday.

“CORD calls on its supporters nationwide to join other Kenyans in honouring Mama Lucy and defer occupation of IEBC offices outside Nairobi,” read the statement in part.

“Occupation of IEBC will, however, resume on Monday, 9th May 2016 nationwide. Thereafter, it will be held every Monday as had been announced earlier,” further read the statement.

This is despite High Court’s ruling blocking the opposition CORD from storming IEBC offices, in a bid to force commissioners out of office, pending determination of a case filed by 5 Jubilee MPs.

Justice Isaac Lenaola issued the orders Friday morning after 5 Jubilee MPs moved to court, to stop the anti-IEBC protests by CORD leaders that kicked off this week.
