CORD threatens to impeach Uhuru over teachers pay impasse

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has threatened to push for the impeachment of President Uhuru Kenyatta for supposedly defying a court order awarding teachers a pay increment.

In a press briefing on Thursday, CORD co-principal Moses Wetangula said the coalition had instructed its Members in Parliament, led by party chairperson John Mbadi, to prepare a motion for the impeachment of President Kenyatta for reportedly defying the court order that awarded teachers a 50 to 60 per cent increment.

The Bungoma Senator further said that CORD would mobilise all its members in Nairobi, including Co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka and coalition leader Raila Odinga, to join teachers in street protests starting next Wednesday to push for the implementation of the court ruling.

The pronouncement by CORD adds to the growing pressure on the government to comply with the Employment and Labour Relations ruling made in June this year to award teachers a 50 to 60 per cent pay increment, dating back to June 2013.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has also weighed in on the matter, calling for the government to obey the court order and effect the pay increment.

The ruling made in July ushered in months of legal battles between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on one side and the Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) on the other, with TSC moving to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court in a bid to block the implementation of the order.

The commission’s efforts have, however, hit a snag with both courts ruling in support of teachers.

On Tuesday, TSC moved to the Employment and Labour Relations Court to push for the suspension of the teachers’ strike, which has lasted for three weeks now.

The strike has paralysed learning in public schools since the beginning of the third term on August 31st 2015, with teachers refusing to return to work until their salaries are paid.

Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Nelson Abuodha is set to rule on the legality of the strike on September 25, 2015.
