CS warns leaders against politicizing NYS programme

The Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Youth Sicily Kariuki has called on leaders not to politicize the National Youth Service (NYS) programme saying it is aimed at empowering the youth.

Speaking during the relaunch of the project in Embu County, the CS said the government has learnt from the failures of the pilot program and will ensure that the new one is a success.

The pilot programme, that lasted about 9 months in 72 constituencies, saw the NYS department lose approximately Ksh 791 million through corrupt dealings.

The CS said they will not allow the programme to be used as a tool to advance political gains saying it is an empowerment program that has benefited many youth since its inception.

She said in the 72 constituencies, the youth saved more than Ksh 930 million and called on them to use the savings to establish enterprises.

Ms Kariuki said the restructured mode of payment will be done on a weekly basis through Saccos and not through mobile money transfer as it was in the past.

Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire urged NYS to ensure payment is done on time to curb incidences where the youth march to the streets demanding their pay.

Over 1,350 youths have been registered in Runyenjes and another 1,350 in Manyatta constituencies.
