Destroying schools is attacking future of Kenya, DP Ruto warns

Deputy President William Ruto has said those engaged in the destruction of school property, either students or hooligans, are attacking the future of Kenya’s children.

Speaking during the Academic Excellence Day at Kang’aru High School in Embu County, the deputy president noted that the education sector is the greatest inheritance any society, government, leadership or parent can give their children.

“The government values education and gives it the priority it deserves. We are investing in education to give every child an opportunity to learn under the same environment. We want to give our young people the best and give them a platform to compete in the global market. Education is critical to posterity”, said Ruto.

The DP said those who threaten the education system are a danger to society.

“We will work together to make sure that we reject, refuse and resist all those who want to destroy our future by attacking our institutions of learning. We must guard them jealously because that is what we can hand over to generations to come,” said Ruto.

The DP’s statement comes in the wake of arson attacks in schools across the country that have seen property worth millions of shillings destroyed.

On Thursday, the government said it would not bow to pressure to close down schools early following the spate of destruction of property in a series of arson attacks.

Deputy President William Ruto and the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the incidents have affected less than one percent of the schools and should not be allowed to determine the fate of over 9,000 other schools.
