Embu gets Ksh 10 million Waste Management Project

Embu County, in conjunction with Japan government under Africa Children Education Fund (ACEF), has embarked on a waste management project in Embu that is aimed at waste management within the county.

The project is aimed at enabling the residents to learn how to separate the refuse from biodegradable and non degradable right from their home before disposal for easy management.

The ACEF Managing Director Minyota Tomoyo, while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) worth 10 million shillings, said the project will run for one year with the aim of changing residents’ minds to be able to manage the environment.

Tomoyo said that the biodegradable refuse will be used to make organic fertilizer while the non degradable will be used to make energy.

She said that the move will see trained youth and women continue with the concept to the others and spread to other parts of the county.

Tomoyo said that the project will also be a source of employment to youths and women who will be engaged in categorizing and collecting garbage from markets in Embu and convert food waste into fertilizer.

She said that restoring the fertilizer into the market will help local people establish the Cyclic Society System which is based on the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) concept.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora said that the project was timely as the county is rolling out the plan to manage waste across the county.

Wambora said that the project will cover 8 townships within the county in a move to bring on board residents on the importance of the waste management right from their homes.

He said that the county has acquired state of the art trolleys which will be used in picking the dumping bins that will be stationed at various points within major towns.

Wambora said that the county has also acquired 33 acre piece of land for the dump site where the energy re-cycling factory will be constructed.
