Govt to set up Kenya Medical Training Colleges in all 47 counties

The government has announced plans to set up Kenya Medical Training Colleges in all the 47 counties by the end of the next financial year.

According to the KMTC board of directors, the move is meant to ensure that all counties are equipped with the crucial medical training facility.

Speaking while he toured the Embu KMTC, Board Member David Kanji said they will however be needing the support of the county governments and members of the public in identifying land where the institutions will be built.

Kanji further intimated that the board of directors would support and provide guidelines to counties during the entire process of the construction of the medical training schools.

The director called on county governments not to withdraw medical personnel from major referral and level five hospitals, since most of them are the lecturers who teach at various KMTCs.

He explained that most KMTCs rely on medical personnel from major hospitals as lectures and for practical exercises, but pointed out instances where county governments have withdrawn medical personnel or transferred them to remote areas, which in turn deals a blow to the training colleges.

Kanji also pledged that the board will embark on the improvement of the existing facilities so as they can be able to offer as many courses as possible and to produce more qualified health personnel.

In Embu for example, Kanji said that the board is in the process of completing the construction of a modern laboratory that will see the increase of the medical courses offered from four to ten.

So far, 13 counties are yet to have medical training colleges.
