Heavy flooding hits Louisiana

Residential areas of Lake Charles, Louisiana, were under feet of water on Sunday (May 1) after torrential rainfall hit the state.

It was flooding that local Martez Taylor blamed on a poor drainage system.

“This is the only place, Lake Charles City, it’s the only place I’ve seen — one day of rain, and it seems like the water just sits. And it’s damaging properties, it’s damaging cars. One day of rain, you might as well get your canoe,” Taylor said.

Volunteer rescuer Marcus Deville, who took his private boat to help bring the elderly to safety, said he’s never seen flooding like this before in the area.

“It floods a little bit, but never this bad. This is the first time in nine years I’ve ever seen it this bad, and some of the homeowners here that’s been here for 30-something years, it’s never been this bad, would actually have water in their houses,” Deville said.

The region has been hard-hit by extreme weather recently. There were seven reported tornadoes from a storm system on Friday in Texas and Oklahoma, and at least six people were killed in Texas due to flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch extending from east Texas into much of Mississippi and a severe thunderstorm watch for New Orleans and the southern Louisiana region.
