IN PICTURES: How police handled CORD protesters in Nairobi
Police changed tact in the handling of CORD protesters during their fourth anti-IEBC march on Monday.
Areas around Anniversary Towers, which houses IEBC, were cordoned off with armed police officers and water cannons in position to disperse any groupings.
A number of protesters who had gathered outside the offices were dispersed using teargas with those standing at the University of Nairobi flyover being dispersed using water cannons.
The police officers then combed the streets of Nairobi, dispersing any gatherings using teargas.
A period of inaction that followed even allowing police to have their lunch break as raving journalists kept watch for any actions.
A police chopper was also at hand to provide aerial surveillance to ensure the situation is under control.
At around 3PM, CORD leaders and their supporters made their way into the City Centre, using Moi Avenue to try and access Anniversary Towers.
The protesters, however, faced resistance on reaching University Way with police using the water cannons to barricade the road, just about 50 metres off Anniversary Towers.
Their attempts to move past the cannon were thwarted after the police sprayed water on the protesters and their leaders forcing them to disperse.
Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome had on Sunday stated that they would not allow CORD protesters to get close to Anniversary Towers saying they had not notified the police of their plans to demonstrate.
CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka has, however, differed with Koome saying they had sent out a notification last month of their intentions to hold protests every Monday until IEBC commissioners vacate office.
