KDF foils attack by over 100 Al-Shabaab terrorists

The Kenya defence forces soldiers this morning foiled an attack by over 100 Al-Shabaab militiamen, killing 16 fighters.

The millitiamen had attempted to attack a KDF camp at Baure in Lamu County near Kenya’s border with Somalia.

Soldiers killed 11 militiamen at the scene, including two militiamen of Caucasian origin, and five others during the battle that ensued into late morning as they pursued them into Boni Forest where they fled.

Two Kenyan soldiers were, however, killed in the attack, which took place at about 5.45am.

Reports indicate that a massive ground and air operation is currently ongoing in the Basuba and Boni Forests to eliminate the heavily armed militants.

“The attack was aggressively repulsed and during the firefight 11 Al-Shabaab terrorist, including two fighters of Caucasian origin, were neutralised,” said Colonel Obonyo.

KDF recovered an assortment of weapons, including 13 AK-47 rifles, five RPGs and eight grenades.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS-LOOKING PEOPLE

Mr Obonyo further appealed to members of the pubic to report any suspicious looking individuals or anybody seeking medical assistance in the area.

After the attack, the militiamen who survived attacked a health centre and secondary school in the same area.

The militiamen reportedly attacked Mangai Health Center where they stole medicine before burning the store and two motorcycles.

They also set Mangai Secondary School dormitory on fire.

Confirming the incident, Senior Chief Lamu County Abdallah Shahassy said the militiamen launched the attack at about 5am and carried on till 7am.

This comes just days after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett issued a statement saying that police are on high alert based on intelligence reports that terrorists might be planning attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan.
