Kenyans have more faith in police boss Joseph Boinnet IPSOS

67% of Kenyans have more confidence in the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet than the Police Service, this is according to a new survey by IPSOS.

According to the pollster, 52% of the respondents expressed confidence in the Police Service, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) receiving an approval rating of 27%.

“However, it is unclear how much these figures will have been affected by recent events,” read a statement fromIPSOS.

According to the survey, 59% of Kenyans say they are unaware of any major recent violations of the Constitution/rule-of-law, 10% of Kenyans aware of violations mention Police brutality, 9% of Kenyans aware of violations mention disobeying court orders, and 7% of Kenyans aware of violations mention extra-judicial killings.

In the survey, 11% of CORD supporters acknowledge such violations by the Police (brutality, extrajudicial killings) with 7% of Jubilee supporters acknowledging the same.

“Regionally, in five out of eight of the former provinces Police brutality is most frequently mentioned, with a particularly high figure, as well as for extra-judicial killings in North Eastern,” read the statement from IPSOS.

According to IPSOS, 40% of CORD supporters are more aware of such violations, with 26% of Jubilee supporters aware of the violations in their localities.

“Whether this is because the occurrence of such violations in Jubilee areas is less common, or that such respondents are disinclined to indict a government run by their chosen leaders is unclear.”

IPSOS stated that at the national level, public awareness of constitutional violations is highest about those committed by the Police (brutality and extrajudicial killings) adding that this was even before the killings of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and taxi driver; the same applies to awareness of such violations at the local level.

2,076 Kenyans aged 18 years and above spread across 41 counties participated in the survey.

The survey was conducted between 4th June-18th June, 2016.
