Kirinyaga Governor Waiguru activates emergency response amid flood threats

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has initiated emergency disaster response measures to deal with floods and other emergencies arising from heavy rains that have hit the County.

In a statement issued Friday, Waiguru further asked people living near Thiba Dam and areas downstream to remain alert as water levels rise rapidly, heightening fears of a potential dam burst.

“I want to ask those blocking waterways to move away because our county is experiencing excess rains with Mwea being worst hit,” she said.

She noted that a dedicated disaster monitoring committee has been established to oversee the situation and implement timely interventions.

Dozens of displaced families are finding temporary refuge in local schools following floods in Mwea, with intensified flood mitigation efforts underway.

Waiguru emphasized the need for collective action against flood risks, highlighting the role of responsible waste disposal in maintaining clear drainage systems.

“The county government is committed to ensuring we save lives and property. For those living in towns, let’s make use of the dustbins so as to avoid dropping papers and debris that is blocking the drainage systems so as to save more lives,” the Governor said.

With road machinery deployed for rapid response, affected areas such as Thiba, MaishaKamili, Soweto, Thiguku, Sagana, Kagio and areas surrounding Wang’uru Stadium continue to receive vital support amidst the crisis.
