KMTC wrong on admission KUPPET

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has launched a scathing attack on the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) over selection of students to join the institution.

Laikipia KUPPET branch Executive Secretary Daniel Ndung’u Wangenye has accused the KMTC Board of dubious deals in the admission of students saying qualified candidates were being denied the opportunity to join the medical training college.

His sentiments comes in the wake of lamentations by parents and students who are now in anguish over parallel admissions by state agencies tussling for the control of public institutions that train health workers.

The Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has admitted 2,305 students to the 42 Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC) across the country.

However, the KMTC management backed by the Ministry of Health, has rejected the admissions arguing that KUCCPS has no mandate to enroll students in its institutions.

KMTC has already admitted 4,860 students through its own advertisement and they are scheduled to report in September this year.

Speaking to the press in his office on Friday morning, Wangenye blamed KMTC over the confusion saying it is known to be a “cash cow and a den of corruption” with intent to lock out qualified students.

Laikipia County has five students who risk missing their placements at the college to pursue Heal related courses.

Wangenye said some students have their names missing and hence asked KMTC to keep off the affairs of placement of students in KUCCPS, which are sponsored by the government noting that students in other government colleges, no such complaints have been reported.

He said KUPPET would take KMTC to court and also invite Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to Court over the same.

Wangenye gave KMTC 14-days ultimatum to issue the students with letters of admission or else face legal redress.

The KMTC Board has maintained that the institution has the mandate under the KMTC Act to admit its own students and does not require the services of KUCCPS.

The board says the institution has mandate to recruit and train nurses and other health professionals, thus, only its management should admit students to its colleges.
