KRA says CS Wamalwa owes it Ksh 6.5M Range Rover duty

The Kenya Revenue Authority now says Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa owes them 6.5 million shillings in unpaid duty for his Range Rover Vogue motor vehicle.

On Wednesday, KRA presented before High Court Judge Isaac Lenaola documents showing the CS owes the taxman the unpaid duty.

Wamalwa is a second owner of the vehicle which he purchased from a Grace Wambui.

Wambui, and 10 others, have filed a petition at the High Court accusing the taxman of not giving them adequate time to comply with a directive to present their vehicles for inspection.

KRA, through its lawyers, has, however, asked the court to dismiss the petition so as to allow them collect the unpaid taxes from the 11 petitioners.

The parties in the suit are now expected to enter consent on how the debts will be settled.

Last week,  KRA’s commissioner for Investigation and Enforcement, Githii Mburu and his team, were at the Railway Club in Nairobi where vehicle owners were required to present their vehicles together with the original ownership, transfer and importation documents.

First to arrive was  Wamalwa’s vehicle but with his Personal Assistant Kizito Temba who defended him saying he (Wamalwa) is not a tax cheat.

“The problem is not with the innocent buyers, it is with the KRA. We did due diligence when the car was bought, we were told all tax had been paid and were allowed to transfer ownership. The KRA must be having all the documents. We are willing to ensure that fairness is dealt in this matter. We are law abiding citizens,” said Temba.
