Laikipia launches massive livestock vaccination campaign

The County Government of Laikipia has launched a vaccination campaign against the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), rabies and Foot and Mouth Diseases (FMD) targeting over 182,400 heads of cattle, 200,000 goats and 3,187 dogs and cats.

The cattle, goats and sheep will be vaccinated against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and the Lumpy Skin diseases.

This follows an outbreak of the diseases in the country, and hence the efforts by the county government to vaccinate the animals.

Livestock farmers have been cautioned against repeated shocks of infectious livestock disease epidemics.

According to Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu, FMD is one of the major diseases that affect the livestock farmers in the region and hence emphasized the need for the farmers to ensure their animals are vaccinated.

This, he said, will safeguard them from food insecurity, fortify their incomes, and enhance safe trade in livestock and animal products by opening trade access not only within the county but also at the national, regional and at international levels.

Irungu said the vaccination campaign is set to kick off on 9th of next month adding that in the coming months, his administration intends to move to greater investment in the animal resource sector which contributes significantly to our County GDP and with greater potential for better performance.
