‘Listen to the experts!’ Azimio leaders fault Gov't over casual response to floods
The opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition
party leaders have faulted the government's response to the ongoing crisis
occasioned by a deluge.
Wiper
leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his DAP-K counterpart Eugene Wamalwa said the
government is casually handling the situation.
Speaking
on Tuesday evening at a city hotel, the Azimio co-principals said the State has
the potential to mitigate and help those affected by floods but they instead appear
reluctant and unaware of how to go about it.
The
opposition downplayed a Cabinet sitting which was chaired by President William
Ruto on Tuesday to deliberate on floods, saying the State should first
recognize the magnitude of the situation and declare it a national disaster.
“We
have to deal with the emergency of never learning; that in itself is an
emergency, we don't seem to learn from mistakes that have been committed. The
weathermen had predicted and they said there is a problem and this government
is simply unable to know how to handle the situation,” said Kalonzo.
The
Azimio leaders called upon the government to tap into the guidelines set by
experts in order to handle the adverse effects of the current heavy downpour.
“The
enormity of the disorganization in this government is very worrying and we must
ask ourselves, as Kenyans, where did the rain start beating us? The rain started
beating us when William Ruto himself stated that there will be no El Niño
despite receiving very clear advice from the experts… so my first advice to
this government is that listen to the experts,” Wamalwa added.
