Man in court over false terror alert

A man was arraigned at Kabarnet Law Courts Wednesday in Baringo County for allegedly spreading false information about an impending terror attack in an unspecified government office at the county headquarters.

Pius Chelagat, who allegedly misinformed a public service worker, contrary to Section 129 (A) of the Penal Code, is accused of sparking unnecessary tension and fear among Baringo residents, compelling the security personnel to conduct 24 hour surveillance and road blocks.

The officer in charge of the investigations, Wesley Sitienei, however, requested the court to allow him to hold the suspect for seven days as his office carries out investigations.

“Allow me to detain the suspect, Pius Chelagat, at the Kabarnet police station for seven days to complete investigations,” requested the officer.

Kabarnet Principal Magistrate, Samson Temo, has urged members of the public to desist from giving false information to the police adding that the impact of such reports can be severe.

For close to three weeks, a combination of armed Administration Police, prison warders and regular police has been combing through Kabarnet Town and its environs due to the false scare.

Revelers were not spared either as police conducted regular swoops at various bars and hotels in the town.

The man was released on a Ksh 50,000 bond and a surety of similar amount as the prosecution completes its investigations. The case will be mentioned on 22nd June.
