Masinde Muliro University closed indefinitely following student unrest

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has been closed indefinitely after a student unrest Tuesday morning.

In a notice to students, the University blamed the riots on a well-orchestrated plan to stop the examinations, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, from taking place.

The notice signed by Acting Registrar Caroline Onyancha stated that: “All students are hereby informed to clear and vacate the University premises immediately but not later than 11:00am today, the 12th day of April 2016.”

The incident comes barely a year after a similar unrest led to the indefinite closure of the University.

Last year’s riots were sparked off by a group of students who protested instances of anomalies in examination registration, leaving ten students injured and property destroyed.

Masinde Muliro’s closure comes just a week after University of Nairobi was also closed indefinitely following students’ unrest over the disputed SONU elections that saw Babu Owino sworn in as the new SONU chair.

62 students have since been suspended over the chaos.
