MCAs exchange blows over Governors impeachment motion

A fist fight erupted at the Nyeri County Assembly chambers after an attempt to table a motion of impeachment against Governor Nderitu Gachagua.

Members of County Assembly (MCAs) supporting the Governor and those pushing for his impeachment clashed after Kiganjo Ward MCA, Baragu Mutahi, attempted to move the motion to eject the Governor from office over what the MCAs term as mismanagement of county resources and alleged abuse of office.

During the confrontations, Chinga Ward MCA, Paul Ngiria, who is a supporter of the Governor, was allegedly assaulted by his colleagues, most of them who are supporting the Governor’s exit.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, Ngiria alleged that he was assaulted by more than five MCAs.

He maintained his support for the Governor insisting that the motion lacks enough ground to send him packing.

Ngiria, who was at the time receiving treatment at the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital, said that he had already recorded a statement at Nyeri Police Station.

Nation Media Group’s journalist, Grace Gitau, who was covering the proceedings, was allegedly assaulted by the MCAs and forced to delete pictures that she had taken during the confrontation.

On his part, Majority Leader, Duncan Gituanja, said the motion to impeach the Governor is still on course and will be tabled again next week.
