Meru matatu operators block all roads over insecurity

Hundreds of matatu operators Wednesday morning blocked major roads leading to and from Meru Town protesting rising insecurity and police harassment.

The protesters barricaded roads and lit bonfires on the roads demanding an audience with the police.

The operators argued that they have in the recent past tried to raise the matter with the police at the Meru Police Station but no action has been taken.

The matatu operators accused police officers of laxity, corruption and not being ready to listen to their grievances.

“We have appointed our Sacco leaders but the OCS seems not to recognize them. When we send them to present our grievances, they are locked outside. All we require is an urgent address to rising insecurity and justice from the officers,” said one of the protesters.

Police have warned they will not tolerate any blockades and will arrest those who participate in the unlawful activity.

The drivers’ representatives have, however, vowed to continue with the protests.

Those affected by the protests are motorists plying the Meru – Nanyuki, Meru – Maua – Isiolo, and Meru – Nairobi roads.
