Mombasa businessman shot dead as insecurity worsens

A Mombasa businessman was Friday night shot dead at Mkomani area in Nyali Constituency as he was driving back home from town.

According to Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed, the deceased was shot two times at around 7.30 pm by two suspects who escaped on motorbike.

Eyewitnesses told Citizen TV in confidence that the deceased was ambushed a few meters from his home and shot dead by the two gunmen who disappeared without stealing anything.

Speaking during a security meeting organised by Haki Africa in a Mombasa hotel on Saturday, Mr Mohammed insisted that criminal gangs interfering with security would face full force of the law.

He further confirmed that four containers were seized at the port of Mombasa allegedly containing drugs on Friday, adding that the containers were currently undergoing a multi-agency verification process.

However, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar accused police of what he termed as laxity to deal with criminal gangs, warning that if they fail to fix the problem things might get out of control during the 2017 General Election.

This comes as security agencies confirmed that apart from Wakali Wao and Wakali Kwanza, there were 20 new criminal gangs operating in Mombasa County.
