Mombasa police on high alert as new gang emerges

Security agencies in Mombasa have launched investigations into alleged formation of a new terror gang and to establish its members and those behind its formation.

The gang is suspected to have played a pivotal in the killing of a police officer at Bondeni area last week.

According to security officials, the gang members have been impersonating police officers using fake police Identification cards.

Addressing journalists after a security meeting, Coast Regional Police Commandant Francis Wanjohi and Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa confirmed that police were investigating those funding the group.

Wanjohi further claimed that the gang has been moving around the county harassing locals. He also said that some of the gang members have been conducting criminal activities wearing Buibuis.

The attackers also hide their firearms in the religious wear.

He added that there is an ongoing operation by security agencies to apprehend those behind the killing of an officer at the Gulf African Bank last week and making away with his G3 rifle.

Three assailants killed a police officer as he guarded the Bank in Bondeni, Mombasa.

The men went to the bank posing as customers and approached the officer, whose colleague had entered the banking hall.

The robbers snatched his rifle, shot the officer three times in the head and killed him before escaping with the loaded gun.

Recently, another group killed a National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer while leaving Anisa Mosque in the same area of Bondeni.

Police have so far arrested a man alleged to be a member of another gang that has been terrorizing residents masquerading as women in Bui Bui’s.

However, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir has accused the police of targeting innocent persons during the crackdown on gangs.

Nassir bailed out over 100 youth arrested during a security operation in his constituency.
