MP Moses Kuria calls for arrest of Sossion over teachers’ strike

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has called for the arrest of KNUT boss Wilson Sossion over the on-going teachers strike.

In a rather scathing attack on Sossion, Kuria termed the strike as an act of economic sabotage saying action should be taken against the union’s boss.

Kuria accused Sossion of being after his own welfare saying he has no interest in fighting for teachers.

“There are teachers who retired in 1997 who are also fighting for their retirement package, how come Sossion is not talking about that?” asked the Gatundu South legislator.

“Sossion is not interested in the welfare of teachers but his own welfare.”

Kuria claimed that KNUT was making hefty earnings through deductions from teachers’ salaries with the union collecting Ksh 1.5 billion annually.

“Sossion wants this strike to go on because they will benefit financially from the teachers increment.”

The legislator pleaded with teachers to give the government time to pay them and called for the sacking of those who will go on strike.

“We urge teachers to be patient with the government as it works on sorting out the increment impasse,” Kuria said.

“Most teachers have students in other schools and when they strike it affects their children as well.”

Kuria was speaking on Wednesday evening at his Gatundu Constituency after an inspection of Gatundu Hospital.

Kuria was accompanied by the Kenya Medical Training College Board chairman Prof. Philip Kaloki on the exercise.

On Wednesday afternoon, KNUT formally announced the commencement of a nationwide teachers strike over the salary increment row with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Addressing the press, Sossion told the government to honour the 50 to 60 percent pay hike as per the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruling in June this year saying teachers will not go to work until money is deposited in their accounts.
