MP says life in danger after voter calls her a prostitute

Runyenjes Member of Parliament Cecily Mbarire says that her life is in danger after reportedly receiving threating text messages.

Mbarire says she received threatening text messages from Erasto Gitongaon several occassions.

The legislator revealed that she had reported the matter to the Ministry of Interior and had sought immediate intervention of the Principal Secretary by requesting for extra security.

Mbarire was speaking outside the Runyenjes Courts where she had gone to testify in an on-going case against Gitonga who has been charged with three counts of insulting and threatening to rape and murder her.

She ruled out forgiving the suspect, as had been requested by his relatives, and said she will not rest until justice is served.

The MP further expressed worry at the way female political leaders were falling victims to unwarranted insults and threats while in the process of exercising their democratic rights.

In the case presided over by Runyenjes Senior Principal Magistrate John Nandi, the suspect, Gitonga, was accused of sending death threats to Mbarire via SMS on May 30th this year, at Kanja South, Runyenjes Sub County.

The suspect is also accused of labeling Mbarire “a prostitute with no any moral authority to interfere with the affairs of Embu County Governor Martin Nyaga Wambora”.

In his defence, the accused, who is out on bond, denied the charges and told the Court that the handset used to send the threats was not his.

He was, however, not allowed to continue with his defence after the prosecutor indicated that the charges were being reconsidered.

The case will be heard on July 8th this year with investigations being carried out to determine the owner of the handset.
