Mungiki suspect survives lynching

Police were on Sunday forced to fire bullets into the air to rescue a suspected Mungiki sect member who had been attacked by irate residents of Kamuiru, Kirinyaga Central sub-county.

According to Kirinyaga County Commissioner Zachary Mbugua, police were called in the area after residents rounded up the middle aged man with an intetion of killing him on allegations that he belonged to the outlawed Mungiki sect.

Mbugua, however, said that after police responded they were instead pelted with stones by the residents who did not want the suspect taken away.

He added that the officers were thus forced to fire in self defense and also to disperse the rowdy crowd that was now baying for the suspect’s blood.

The commissioner appealed to residents not to take the law into their own hands and instead report such suspicious people to the people where justice will take its course.
