Nairobi businessman under fire for killing guard in car crash

A Nairobi businessman is under investigation over a car crash in which a night guard died amid claims that the businessman was drunk-driving.

Joel Kibe crashed into a security barrier in Nairobi’s Runda Estate Monday night, killing the guard on the spot. Kenyans expressed outrage on social media after a widely-shared video footage appeared to show the businessman downplaying the fatal accident.

Residents of Runda estate are still reeling in shock following the accident that claimed the life of the security guard after a former CMC director and businessman Joel Kibe allegedly lost control of his car and rammed it into a security barrier killing the guard on the spot.

Going by the trail of destruction left behind at the scene, police say Kibe is actually lucky to be alive. Police forensic experts are yet to establish whether Kibe was drunk when driving, though in a video clip obtained by Citizen TV, he’s heard speaking in a slurred speech.

According to the deceased’s colleagues who work for the Chancery Security Group, the guard by the name Wachira was not supposed to be on duty but had come to stand in for his colleague who was not feeling well.

Following the 3AM incident, Kibe accompanied police officers to the Gigiri Police Station for questioning. He was later released on a Ksh 70,000 police bond after he requested to go to the hospital for a checkup.

According to the police, Kibe will be arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi at 9AM Wednesday to face charges of causing death by reckless driving. Police say the car was released to Kibe after being inspected.
