Nairobi to unclog South C drainage ahead of El Nino

Nairobi City County will deploy 400 youth in South C area to unclog blocked drainage in preparation of the El Nino rains.

According to Nairobi CEC for Infrastructure and Roads Mohamed Abdulahi, the county government’s decision is guided by the detrimental effects caused by El Nino in 1997 and flash floods of May 2015.

“We are now meeting Nairobi residents to conduct public awareness campaigns and enlighten them on how they can cope during El Nino,” he said.

South C is one of the areas likely to be affected by the El Nino due to its poor drainage that has caused houses to flood during heavy rains.

He said that most of these systems have been in place since the colonial time and have become ineffective.

Abdulahi assured that the exercise will extend to other parts of the county in order to make the country free of flooding.

The CEC also put building owners on notice saying any building constructed on a drainage path will be demolished.

He noted that the Nairobi County Assembly is looking into drafting a bill which will revoke all licenses of properties that have contravened City laws especially those utilizing public lands on temporary basis.

The county government will also allocate Ksh 953 million for the installation of street lights in South C to improve security in the area.

He said that the crime rate had reduced from 1,200 incidences to 300 incidences per month.

The meeting is a series of Public Participation sessions the County government is putting in place to interact with Nairobi residents ahead of the expected El Nino rains.

Leaders present include South C area MCA Diana Kapeen, Nairobi County Roads Director Stephen Mburu among other county government officials.
