Nakuru MP in court over alcohol

Nakuru East Member of Parliament David Gikaria has been arraigned in court after he allegedly destroyed and dumped illicit liquor along the Great North road in Nakuru.

Mr. Gikaria appeared before Nakuru Senior Resident Magistrate Judicaster Nthuku but denied the charges.

His lawyer, however, alleges that the charges were politically motivated due to the differences between the MP and Nakuru Governor, Kinuthia Mbugua.

Speaking on the same vein, Nakuru National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) prosecutor Moses Mburu said the act by the MP was a bad example to residents as he had led hundreds of his supporters to destroy liquor considered to be harmful.

Gikaria was released on a 200,000 shillings cash bail and ordered to report in court on October 19th when the case will be heard.

The war on illicit liquor has seen millions of litres of second generation brews destroyed, hundreds of businesses shut down and dozens of brew dens and factories shut down.
