Nandi residents decry poor sewage management

By Daniel Korir

Residents of Iruru village in Nandi County have lamented about waste management in the area, saying that they are exposed health risks as raw sewage is flowing into their water sources.

According to the irate residents, the sewage issue has persisted for the last few months.

The sewage machine which used to pump the waste to main sewage reservoir is said to have stalled several months where raw, and untreated effluent finds its way to the river system.

Residents revealed that they have been frustrated by the county government’s lack of response adding that they can no longer remain silent.

According to Jepkorir Mustuni, one of the residents, waterborne diseases have been experienced especially during rainy season as many people have been admitted at hospital.

The affected residents have been living with the stench of raw sewage, a situation which has exposed them to health hazards.

She said that the inception of county government was to bring hope but that hope is nowhere to be seen.

They are pleading with the county government of Nandi to do immediate action so as to correct the anomaly.

Sanitation has been an issue of concern across the country, especially following a cholera outbreak that affected 10 counties over the last few months.

According to a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) report released in June, 72 people succumbed to cholera in the first six months of the year.

Though there has been a drop in the number of reported incidences of the waterborne disease, there are concerns that ongoing El Nino rains may herald a fresh outbreak.
