One person dies after mine collapses in Migori

One person died and three others were injured Wednesday evening after they were buried alive in a collapsed gold mine at Kamwango village in North Kamagambo ward, Migori County.

Confirming the incident, Rongo police boss Kisaka Muganda said police in collaboration with the locals managed to rescue the four trapped miners who were rushed to Rongo Sub County Hospital. One man however succumbed to his injuries.

“The four were doing their mining activities when a landslide occurred, trapping them in the mine for several hours,” he said.

Kisaka is now appealing to the miners to be cautious during their mining activities so as to prevent such occurrences. He further urged them to use better technology.

Despite several lives having been lost at the mines in Migori, the miners have continued with their activities saying mining is their only source of income.

The body of the deceased is preserved at Rosewood Hospital mortuary while the three are recuperating in hospital.

This comes barely a month after a mine collapsed at Charuru village in Tigania East Sub County, Meru County killing one miner.

Confirming the incident, Tigania East OCPD Charles Kosgey said four miners were trapped when a quarry they were working on collapsed. One miner was rescued while two others managed to escape.
