Over 300 teachers trained on handling arson cases

Over 300 School heads and education stakeholders in Tharaka Nithi have received specialized training and awareness on how to manage and deal with arson cases in schools.

The one day workshop brought together the security team from MeruSouth led by the TharakaNithiCounty Commissioner and over 300 school heads was held at MagumoniGirls Secondary School in Chuka town.

The teachers were enlightened on intelligence collection mechanisms in their institutions with experts from different security organs training the teachers on how to handle incidents such as arson.

The chairman of Kenya Professional Society of Criminology (KEPSOC), Munene Mugendi, noted that the issue of arson in schools has become very rampant and a solution in needed immediately.

He said that there is a gap that needs to be closed in schools through empowering the heads on information that will help them identify various aspects of crime through intelligence gathering.

Mugendi said that the training will spread to other counties after the pilot in Tharaka Nithi, which is one of the most affected by the arson cases.

Meru South OCPD, Beatrice Kiraguri, claimed that the arson cases are work of a well coordinated cartel that involves students and members of the communities around schools.
