Passengers run for safety as snake boards matatu

Passengers at a Kabarnet matatu terminus, Baringo County were Saturday afternoon treated to a bizarre incident when a snake came out of a matatu which they were alighting from.

The vehicle, a seven-seater commonly known as Nguruwe had come from Tenges in Baringo central, a place known for its prominence of world deadliest snakes.

The visibly scared passengers panicked and ran for safety.

However, not all freaked out as the valiant matatu touts got a chance to show their prowess in dealing with the life-threatening creature; consequently killing it.

After the kill, speculations started flowing in with some quotas claiming the snake in the matatu was a product of witchcraft.

Most of them agreed and those who differed nearly got a beating from the majority who held on to the dominant belief.

However, a snake expert identified as Gilbert Kiptallam dismissed the claims.

After keen analysis of the reptile, Mr Kiptallam identified the snake as a black mamba; the second fastest killer snake in Africa after the Egyptian cobra.

Kiptallam added the serpent, which hunts during day, could have wandered into Kabarnet town as its eco-system has been encroached by the the rising human population.

He took advantage of the incident to enlighten the people on snake bite management.

He further warned those who played with the snake’s lifeless body to refrain as its venom was still actively dangerous for another 72 hours.
