Police ban Mombasa facebook group over security concerns

Police in Mombasa County have banned a social media group whose members have been linked to criminal activities.

Coast Region Police Commandant Francis Wanjohi issued a stern warning on the “Mombasa Crime Alert” group which has been highlighting criminal activities saying that its social media platforms stand outlawed.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday evening, Wanjohi said the group was banned by the County Security Committee after complaints from public that it has been linked to criminal activities such as arresting, assaulting and harassing people.

The group has 40,092 members on its Facebook account, some of whom have been accused of impersonating police officers.

A ceremony to hand over Mtwapa Traffic Commander’s office, which was allegedly build by a local company in Kilifi County, got cancelled at eleventh hour following claims that the group was involved in the matter.

The ceremony, which was to be attended by Mr. Wanjohi, raised more questions than answers.
