Pope Francis tells youth to choose destruction or progress

Pope Francis has held his final public meeting at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani where he addressed hundreds of youth before going for a closed door meeting with Bishops and later with Governors.

In his address, he said the evil spirit leads to destruction, lack of unity, corruption, drug abuse and fanaticism, things he says are not healthy for the growth and progress of the country.

The Pope said a man or woman loses the worth of their humanity when they forget how to pray.

In the event attended by top government officials including President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, the Pope opined that while life is difficult, there are different ways of addressing the daily challenges.

The Pope told the youth that they are open to choice.

“You can ask yourself, is this path to destruction, or is it an opportunity to overcome this challenge for me, my family and as a member of this country,” stated Pope Francis.

“Young people, we don’t live in heaven, we live on earth and earth is full of difficulties. You have the capacity to choose which path you want to follow, the path of opportunity or of division.”

“Do you want to overcome challenges or be overcome by them?” posed the Pope.

The Pope also urged the youth to promote good initiatives to make a difference through communication whether it is in person or through technology.

“The first means of communication is the word, smile and gestures,” said the Pope. “The first gesture is being close to others, trying to look for friendship with others. If you speak well among yourselves, then you can smile and accept each other.”

Pope Francis urged the Kenyan youth to be close to each other even to people from different tribes.

“If you are close to each other even from different tribes, close to the poor, the rejected and the abandoned, those gestures of communication are more contagious than any channel on TV,” stated the Pope.

“Pray to the Lord to give you strength to destroy tribalism and hold each other’s hands like brothers and sisters.”

He further urged the youth to have the courage to not allow each other to be corrupted and offer joy to other people.

He also urged the youth to have strong family values.

“Family is important, defend the family always,” said the Holy Father.
