Reformed drug addicts to join NYS Nkaissery

Drug addicts who will successfully undergo the rehabilitation process will now be absorbed into the National Youth Service (NYS). This is according to Interior Cabinet secretary Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery.

Nkaissery, who was in Kwale for the official launch of a crackdown on drug dens and a meeting with drug addicts, said that the government will from Tuesday start the rehabilitation process for the addicts, who are majorly youth.

The Interior CS made the announcement after meeting drug addicts in Kwale with a promise of reforming them and absorbing them in productive sectors.

He assured the more than 1,700 drug addicts from the area that the government would not arrest them following reports that the crackdown order for by President Uhuru Kenyatta last week was targeting them.

He said that the crackdown will ruthlessly deal with drug traffickers who have caused misery to thousands of young people especially in the coastal region.

Nkaissery said that Intelligence officers are already on the ground and are combing every possible den and documents in order to unearth the drug barons in the coastal region.

The meeting, which was not attended by any political leader, brought together the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett, Kwale County Commissioner Evans Achoki and other security officials from the coast region together with an aim of finding a lasting solution to the drug barons.

Last week, President Kenyatta ordered for a crackdown similar to that carried out of illicit brew on all drug dens in Kenya’s coast region.

President Kenyatta said it is high time the country took drug barons head-on and addressed the drug menace once and for all.

His sentiments came less than a month after the government sank a second boat that was intercepted along the Kenyan coast strip allegedly ferrying drugs.

The coast region has been notorious with drug trafficking with even senior government officials and politicians being linked to the illegal business.

But will the crackdown bring an end to the drug business or enjoy much success like the war on illicit and second generation brews? It’s a wait-and –see situation.
