Rescue continues in Taiwan earthquake

Rescue workers in Taiwan continue to find and pull survivors from the rubble of collapsed buildings in the southern city of Tainan on Sunday.

Twenty-year-old survivor Huang Kuangwei was hoisted out of the remains of his home. After more than 24 hours trapped inside the Golden Dragon Apartment complex, he was given emergency treatment at the scene, before being moved to hospital.

The death toll from the powerful earthquake reached 26 by Sunday night, the Tainan fire agency said.

The collapse of the most seriously damaged building, Wei Guan building, killed 23.

Rescuers are racing against time to save more than 120 people who are still trapped in the rubble of the buildings.

More than 600 rescuers, including firefighters and volunteers, as well as 105 fire engines and 44 ambulances have been involved in the rescue.

The 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Kaohsiung at 03:57 Beijing Time on Saturday at a depth of 15 kilometers, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

Local monitoring authorities put the scale of the quake at 6.4 magnitude.

Previous reports said more than 460 people were injured.

The Chinese mainland has offered help. While addressing a lunar New Year gathering on Saturday morning, Premier Li Keqiang sent condolences to the victims.
