Respect your employer and salaries commission, Ruto to teachers

Deputy President William Ruto has told teachers to respect Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) even as they push for salary increment.

Speaking at Mosoriot Africa Inland Church (AIC) in Nandi County during the Sunday Sermon, Ruto said salaries for public servants are set according to their job, responsibility and qualification adding that the role is solely at the discretion of SRC.

“The Constitution has set the SRC to determine salaries of public workers from the President to the messenger,” said Ruto.

Ruto noted that it was the responsibility of all Kenyans to respect the decisions made by the court of law to enable the country run under constitutional pillars.

“We must respect the rule of law and all the constitutional bodies given powers by the Constitution,” said the Deputy President.

The Deputy President said the harmonisation of salaries would unite all workers and avoid confrontation adding that all persons with equal qualifications and responsibilities in different sectors must be paid the same.

Governors Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Alex Tolgos (Elgeyo/Marakwet), Chesumei MP Elijah Langat, Nandi County Women Representative Zipporah Kering and Nandi Deputy Governor Dominic Biwott accompanied Ruto.

Meanwhile, the Deputy President has asked farmers in the North Rift region to invest more in the dairy sector.

The Deputy President said plans were underway to start Artificial Insemination centers in the region to cater for the needs of dairy farmers.

“We want to start more liquid nitrogen centers so that Kenyans cannot only rely on Kabete alone for the AI services,” said Ruto.

Speaking at Kipsoen Catholic Church in Keiyo North Constituency on Sunday, Ruto said milk production is key to improvement of living standards among many farmers emphasizing on the need for Kenyans to invest heavily in the sector.

Ruto urged farmers to commercially and professionally invest in dairy farming saying the activity was paying if given the attention it deserves.

He told leaders to focus their energies at activities, which could help address the problem of poverty.

“We should focus our attention to development projects which can reduce the poverty levels,” said Ruto.

The Deputy President said the government was committed to the improvement of infrastructure to enable farmers’ access to market for their produce.

Ruto’s utterances come a day after teachers unions, KNUT and Kuppet, announced the suspension of the five-week strike in accordance with a court ruling made on Friday.

The unions called on its member to resume duty on Monday as they push for TSC to pay teachers’ salaries for the month of September and engage in negotiations on the way forward regarding the 50 to 60 salary increment awarded by the Employment and Labour Relations Court in June.

In its ruling on Friday, the court retaliated its early ruling made a week ago, ordering TSC to release teachers’ salaries for September while calling on teachers to suspend the strike for 90 days to allow for negotiations.
