Senior cop shocks vetting panel after failing to list police hierarchy

A senior police officer shocked the vetting panel after she failed to list rankings in the police service despite serving for years.

Charity Chepkemoi Mayek, an acting Police Commander based in Kericho, was unable to list the different ranks in the service that she has served for years now.

Appearing before the Johstone Kavuludi-led vetting panel, Ms Mayek was unable to list even the basic ranks and their occupants.

She started by listing the Office of the Inspector General of Police, held by Joseph Boinett, before stating that under Boinett are four deputies, contrary to the two existing deputies.

In her response, she listed the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Administration Police, deputy IG in charge of Kenya Police and deputy IG in charge of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, saying she had forgotten the fourth one.

However, there are only two deputy IG, one in charge of Administration Police – currently held by Samuel Arachi, and the second one in charge of the Kenya police – under Joel Kitili.

Ms Mayek was also unable to identify the rank of the Rift Valley Regional Administration Police Commander, Francis Kirathe, instead referring to him as an Assistant Commissioner of Police, a rank that does not exist in the service.

Ms Mayek was grilled for over an hour, a process that takes between 15 – 20 minutes.

Most officers who appeared before the panel sitting at a Nakuru hotel, were unable to express themselves in fluent English forcing the panel to opt for Kiswahili, a language that most of them can easily communicate in.

The officers were also hard pressed to explain mobile money transfers and huge wealth accumulations.
