Stephjoy dormitory fire suspects arraigned in court

11 students of Stephjoy Boys High School, who were arrested after a fire razed down a dormitory in the school on Monday, have been arraigned in a Kiambu court.

The eleven did not take plea after Justice George Oduor granted the prosecution two more days to complete investigations pending hearing on August 6th.

This as the death toll following the fire at the school rose to three as one student succumbed to injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital.

On Monday, the Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro said the students in police custody are assisting with investigations.

Muhoro further noted that poor planning was partly to blame for the fire saying contractors did not follow set regulations when constructing the dormitories.

“There was poor planning in the construction of the school dormitories. The set regulations were not adhered to during the construction work,” he said.

Muhoro said action will be taken against any person found guilty of the crime.

The school dormitory was allegedly set ablaze by students at 1AM monday leading to the death of three students and leaving 10 others injured.
