Students vacate hostels over fear of terror attack

Tension is high at Moi University’s Main Campus in Eldoret after police on Tuesday confirmed that four students who had gone missing in September are suspected to have crossed the border into Somalia to join Al Shabaab.

Last night, most students reportedly spent their night away from their hostels for fear of attacks following the revelation.

Twince Korir, a student at the institution said: “I better sleep outside campus than sit here and wait for death.”

A security officer at the university told Citizen Digital that the university had put in place security measures to help ease the tension but they did not seem to work.

“Since Monday, the police have been patrolling the institution and its premises but the students are not content,” the security officer said.

Recently, Eldoret County Commissioner Abdi Hassan said that terrorists are targeting students and orphans for radicalization.

He noted that Eldoret had become easy target for them because of its high number of institutions of higher learning.

Moi University Student Organization chairman, Jared Mogire, expressed concern over the recent developments and called on security officials to beef up security at the institution.

He noted that they received information about the missing students in September after they were allegedly radicalized by two of their colleagues.

Mr Mogire urged students to be the vigilant even as the security officials investigate the matter.

The National University Students’ Organization (KNUSO) chairman, Justin Safari, stressed the need for the government to address the state of security in all institutions of higher learning.

Students in campuses across the country have been on high alert since April this year after terrorists attacked Garissa University College and killed 147 students.
