Tigania East traders protest market closure

Mikinduri Market traders in Tigania East Sub-county in Meru on Thursday thronged streets to protest closure of the market over a dispute pitting Governor Peter Munya and Tigania East Member of Parliament Mpuru Aburi.

The dispute between the two over the location of the market that has dragged on for years.

The traders claim they found the market gates locked with Police, County officers and the National Youth Service manning the place.

Speaking to the media outside the market, one of the traders,  NkunjaMwenda, said that the MP and the area Deputy County Commissioner closed the market due to poor services.

Mwenda says that despite paying high levies to the county government, the market is in a filthy state.

Another trader, Rebecca Wanja, said the market lacks stalls and this causes their products to be destroyed by the scorching sun and rain.

Wanja also stated there is lack of proper sanitation which exposes traders and consumers to health hazards.

The traders have called on the relevant authorities to step in and improve services at the market to enable them to trade in a conducive environment like other markets in the county.
